From the Headmistress

Dear Parents

A very important letter from Mr Stringer this week about Sports Day.  We will have a wonderful day if this weather lasts as long as we all follow "Mr Stringer's instructions below"!

Don't forget our sun policy! Slip on a League T shirt of the right colour provided by the school on the day, slap on a hat to wear when not competing, slop on lots of sun cream and bring spare cream with you and slurp lots of water and bring plentiful supplies!

Next week I have invited The Parents' Association to head up this newsletter, but in the meantime, a big thank you to them for their fabulous uniform sale that raised £250 for the swimming pool cover and promises to be a great idea for the future.

Sports Day

Dear Parents

As I am sure you are aware it is our Sports Day this Saturday. Pupils are expected to arrive in their sports kit (League t-shirt, black shorts, rugby or white socks, trainers or spikes) at the Senior School athletics track (behind the Lord Riche Hall) by 10.15 am, where they will register in their League.

All pupils from Year 3 to Year 8 are involved and expected to be there. The day will finish by 4.30 pm following presentations. Please can you provide your child/children
with a packed lunch as only full boarders will have lunch provided.

All pupils are the responsibility of their parents unless they are
competing and please may I ask all parents to remain outside of the track at all times. Like last year we will be supporting MacMillian Cancer Support and are asking pupils to bring in £1 in support - this is totally voluntary and the money should go to the Head of League.

I hope you all enjoy the day and I look forward to a day of healthy competition and mutual support - may the best League win!

World Class Tests

This week 17 of our Very Able Pupils (VAPS) in Years 5, 6, 7 and 8 have completed their World Class Test in problem solving.  These tests are designed to stretch and challenge the most able pupils internationally.

Congratulations to Lara Peck and Hannah Barratt who were awarded a Distinction and to Samuel Barratt and Leo Jewell who gained a Merit.

This year we have a record number of pupils entering and we look forward to receiving their results later this term.  We will be entering pupils for the next round of assessments in the autumn term.

News from Courtauld House

Year 8 have begun their Citizenship Week by watching Slumdog Millionaire as an inspiration for their League projects which this year are: Cromwell - Genocide; Gaselee - Poverty; Grignon - Aids; Lord Riche - The Holocaust and Smythies - Amnesty International.  To boost understanding Mr James Savage from Amnesty International is coming to talk to all of Year 8 about the very valuable work that they do this Friday.

The Leagues then began to plan their presentations. In addition they have been touring the Senior School library to help them next year as well as beginning Mr Finch's exciting inter-league sports challenge.

Even more exciting have been the first rehearsals for the Leavers' Show! All of Year 8 also spent Tuesday afternoon over at Felsted School participating in team building exercises run by Major Eke which seemed to involve a lot of running around and wearing of camouflage cream! All in all it has been a busy week and there is plenty more to come next week.

Leadership Afternoon - by Stefan Warmer

On Friday 18th June Year 7 participated in the Leadership Challenge Afternoon. This was designed to build on teamwork and help to develop some of the leadership in the year group. We were divided into leagues and asked to do a number of challenges. This included an obstacle course, bridge building and  other initiative tests. We also had to look after and care for an egg character for the afternoon. Only 2 leagues broke their egg. Overall Lord Riche won the competition although we all learned a lot about ourselves and each other.

The Year 8 transfer meeting for Learning Support Pupils and Parents on the 29 June at 6.00pm has been cancelled. Alternatively the Support for Learning Department in Felsted Senior School are available for individual appointments and will be contacting you directly.

Stewart House News

Stewart House pupils are spending this week in Africa! The children have learned about the continent, a number of African countries and African animals thanks to some fascinating talks from visiting speakers. One of our Gap students, Brett France, came to talk about his native South Africa and had the children spellbound. Mrs Stringer gave an interesting talk about aspects of life in Africa, and OF Cecilia West shared her experiences of working on a game reserve with the children, which included playing football with an elephant!

We have been privileged to welcome a group from Portsmouth University who came on Wednesday afternoon to sing, play and dance to the children, who took the opportunity to join in enthusiastically!  The children were also introduced to the ‘talking drum’, and were able to try it out after learning some simple songs and dances. We are extremely grateful to Mr Olwabusola and Dr Adeegbe for arranging these visits, which were inspiring and exciting for all concerned.

Later this week we shall be working on African textiles with a visiting specialist, and learning some Swahili. Rosamund West (another West daughter and OF!) will share her experience of living and teaching in Tanzania. In class the children have been studying the map of Africa, learning about animals and  painting masks.

We are supporting the charity ‘Send a Cow’ this week and will raise money through a cake stall on Friday. This will be managed by the Year Two Young Leaders, and we would be very grateful for your support in contributing cakes or biscuits, which should be brought to school on Friday morning. The sale will be held at 3.30pm on Friday. We are also planning to make some ‘African footballs’ from plastic bags, as is the practice in poorer parts of the continent, and to hold a Stewart House version of the World Cup. Please would you send your child to school with £1.00 on Friday as a ‘fee’ for taking part.

We welcomed our new pupils to school on Wednesday with our Induction Morning. The morning passed very peacefully, with initial tears quickly overcome, and the children enjoyed their first taste of school life. We look forward to becoming better acquainted with them and their families and building strong relationships with them in the coming years.

We look forward to seeing parents at the Stewart House swimming gala next Monday, at 1.30pm in the outdoor pool beside the Roed Sports Hall. Please remember to apply sun protection to your child in the morning, and ensure that your child has his/her sunhat in school. Children should have the regulation black swimming kit and their gold swimming hats.

League Captains Outing

On the 21 June 2010 the League Captains and Boarding Captains all went out on an outing to go bowling and then have dinner. We arrived at Freeport to first begin our bowling. The bowling was incredibly enjoyable and a good laugh with our friends and teachers. We went to Prezzo for our dinner. There we talked to the teachers and fellow captains whilst having dinner. Each of the leaving League and Boarding Captains made a short speech, and so did Mrs Burrett to thank the captains, and George Botwright to thank the teachers. It was overall a very good evening and I would like to thank Mrs Burrett, Mr Searle, Mr Fincher and Mr Stringer for taking us.
