From the Chairman of Governors

Dear Parents

I am delighted to be addressing you in this week’s newsletter as the Chairman of Governors. I understand that the Year 8 examination results are out and I have been interested to read of pupil success. I look forward to hearing how the younger years have performed shortly.  I hope this sun shines on all the exciting activities that will fill the remainder of this term.

Recently Jenny Burrett had a full appraisal and I am very pleased to be able to confirm that you are in excellent hands. I hope you will enjoy reading the very warm and positive comments that have emerged from her 360% appraisal which tell of a highly professional, ambitious and capable Head who is leading a dynamic and flourishing school of which I am proud to be the Chairman of Governors.

The parent survey, whilst attracting a limited response, tells of a contented parent body, with few concerns. I am confident that Jenny and her team will do all that they can to continue to take Felsted Preparatory School forward with the good of the majority in mind.

Regrettably I will not see you this year on Speech Day, but look forward to reports of the day and I am sure that you will be very pleased with all that the School has achieved this year.

Yours sincerely

Mr John H Davies (Chairman of Governors)

Stewart House & Car Parking

All contractors are directed to the site of Ingrams for the duration of the building contract.  Only delivery vehicles will be seen and these are at non-drop-off times.

The School is planning to create a further overflow car park with a drop off and walk to school facility to accommodate parental concerns and traffic demand.  However, there are planning issues to address and the earliest time that we might be able to offer this is September.  This will also solve parking problems that arise.

Cricket

3rd XI v Holmwood House: Felsted won by 130 runs. Avent 43 n.o., Gable 2 for 8, Jewell 2 for 11. Felsted 175 for 8 from 25 overs. Holmwood 45 all out.

The U11 A V Holmwood House lost by 3 wickets. We were bowled out for 76, but bowled and fielded well. We had Holmwood at 26-6 at one point, but a good seventh wicket partnership got them all but home.

U11 B v Holmwood House - 25 overs & lost.  Holmwood House 155 for 5 Felsted 56 all out.  Holmwood house batted first and reached 155 runs for 5. Thomas Carrington bowled well but our fielding let us down and some lacklustre bowling did not help. Felsted reached 56 facing some strong bowlers. Alex Manson managed to stay in for a solid innings but only managed 17 runs top score and Thomas Walker swung his bat and tried to play a few defensive strokes for 9 runs. A disappointing performance against a strong side.

U11 B/C beat St Cedd's by 39 runs. We scored 66 for 8, thanks mainly to a partnership between Cameron Cowie and Luke Bury. We then bowled and fielded magnificently, with Hamish Rowe and Aspen Drewitt-Barlow crashing through their top order.

U12 Cricket v The Perse

A tremendous performance from the U12 team, captained by Deo Simcox and Olly Salmon, saw them beat the Perse School in a 20-20 game by 17 runs. We batted first with a good opening partnership from James Hoile (scored 8) and A. Austin (scored 13) before Adam Cooper came in and dominated the innings (scored 32).  Deo Simcox scored a handy 8 runs as we reached exactly 100 off our 20 overs. The pace of the batting was impressive and a lot of quick singles were taken. The bowling and fielding then had to be tight and on the whole it was! J.  Austin opened the bowling with a couple of tidy overs and Olly Salmon bowled 3 overs for only 5 runs. James Hoile and Adam Sheehan bowled tidily as did Deo Simcox and Jamie Smart.

Adam Cooper caused the batsman real trouble in his two overs and Alex Austin took a nice wicket. The pick of the bowlers however was Charlie Broom who bowled three overs, took 3 wickets and only conceded 8 runs. All the players were busy in the field and the 'chat' and encouragement was impressive. A special mention also for Tom Pohl who made his debut at wicket keeper and did a very fine job indeed. Overall it was a hugely impressive and enjoyable game where, once again, cricket was the winner!

Mr Stringer

U9A Cricket v Dame Bradbury's - Won by 100 runs
This was another impressive win by a group of talented boys, who  played very well as a team. There were some good individual performances, but the highlight was tight bowling by all, excellent fielding and running between the wickets. The excitement mounts as we neared the final match of the year with our 100% win record intact!

Cricket Results
U11B v Dame Bradbury A - Felsted Won.  Dame Bradbury A team batted 117 for 7.  Felsted 119 for 4 in the last over.

U11A beat Forest School by 30 runs. A magnificent 69 not out by Charlie Latham set up a score of 139, which we defended comfortably, with nine players getting a bowl. Toby Wilkes' spell of leg spin was outstanding!

Rounders v Brandeston:

U12A, U11A & U11B - all won.  Well done.

Country Dancing

Pupils, teachers and Year Two parents had a thoroughly enjoyable and energetic time on Tuesday for the country dancing afternoon.  All the children took part in a number of dances, and the parents were invited to join in with some of them. Everyone took part with great enthusiasm, especially several fathers, whose lack of previous experience did not seem to hold them back! The children had learned some complicated dances, and were able to guide their parent partners through them successfully. As always, Mrs Randall did a splendid job in organising the event and encouraging everyone to take part. Thanks also to Mr Clarke who helped on the technical front.

Reception outing to Fingringhoe Nature Reserve

On Thursday the Reception pupils enjoyed a wonderful day at Fingringhoe Nature Reserve, where they had the chance to go bug-hunting and pond dipping. The staff at the centre were very helpful and organised and all the children enjoyed the chance to participate in the experience. The weather was bright and sunny, and a good day was had by all.

Hedingham Castle Visit!

Africa Week

We are looking forward to Africa Week next week. There is a busy timetable of events planned for all age groups, and we are very grateful to those parents who have offered to come and share their knowledge and skills with the children. If any parents have African artefacts, pictures or information which they are happy to lend to us for a few days next week, it would be greatly appreciated.

Cake Stall

Year Two will be fundraising for Send a Cow during the week, after a talk from a local representative of the charity. We shall be holding a cake stall on Friday from 3.30pm in the playground. We would be very grateful for any cakes or baked goods which you are willing to contribute. Items should be brought to school on Friday morning and taken to Toad Hall. Any home-made items should be clearly labelled with information about nut or dairy contents. The Year 2 children will set up the tables and will sell the cakes at the end of the day. Please remember to bring some cash with you when you collect your children!

Plastic carrier bags and £1.00 for charity

As part of their Africa Week activities, the children will be recycling plastic bags in an imaginative and topical way. If you have some unwanted plastic carrier bags please would you bring them to school at the start of next week. Please will all pupils bring £1.00 to school on Friday to take part in a special (surprise!) activity.

Violin Assembly

There will be a violin presentation in assembly time (9.00-9.30am) on Monday 28 June. Parents are welcome to attend, especially if your child aspires to having violin lessons. These will be available to children in Years 1 and 2 from next September

News from Ffrome Court

Last Friday all the members of Ffrome Court enjoyed participating in the annual gala arranged by Mrs Green. There were heats in the lessons, running up to the event, so there were many closely contested races.  It was evident how much the children's swimming had improved over the year and Mrs Burrett was impressed by the over all standard.

ESB Examinations - fantastic results for Year 4!

Year 4 have achieved record results in their recent English Speaking Board examination, with every child passing and 80% gaining a Merit Plus or Distinction grade.

Over the first half term we worked towards these English Speaking Board examinations as part of our English Curriculum. The aim of this is to develop essential life skills which enable pupils to present confidently to a public audience.

These are the best results to date in a public examination in which we already have a superb track record and the children should be immensely proud of their effort and congratulated  on this fantastic achievement.

Music News

Year 3 & 4 Choir Entertain Bings & Abbeyfield Residents

The Year 3 and 4 Chamber Choir entertained the residents of Abbeyfield and Bings Hall on Tuesday afternoon. The children had been rehearsing a selection of Old Time Music Hall songs in preparation for their Summer Concert and thought it appropriate to sing them to people in our local community.

The residents joined in with ‘Let’s all go down the Strand’, ‘Knees up Mother Brown’ and ‘Daisy Daisy’ among others, and reminisced on their younger days. The children then entertained them by playing their solo instruments with great confidence. It was a fantastic afternoon for all involved – the residents thoroughly enjoyed being taken back to their youth, chatting with our children and sharing musical stories and our children performed with confidence and showed great talent.  The children will be singing once again at Croft House next week.

Mrs Clarke

We would like to invite you to watch the Year 3 and 4 concert on 22 June in the Ross Hall at 4.15pm. The Year 3’s will perform on their solo instruments and the  Steel Band and Drama group will also perform.

We will then entertain you with our Old Time Music Hall songs! Bring along Grandmas and Grandpas to sing along with us!

The more the merrier!

Cloisters News

Well done to Year 5 and 6 who have worked very hard during the
Examinations this week. Any pupils who have missed Examinations will have the opportunity to catch up over the coming days. All Year 5 and 6 deserve a well earned rest over the EXEAT as when we return there are several events to prepare for.

Year 6 will need to hand in their Passport folders on Friday the 25th
to me and I have spoken to them about this this week. There is a Disco from 4.30- 5.45 with a beach party theme! If you have not sent the reply slip in to the Form Tutor please do so on Monday. Year 6 will
also be attending the Crucial Crew safety training day at Clarence House, Thaxted, so look out for some well trained health and safety inspectors!

Thank you for your continued support during the examination period, the children did us proud in the way they tackled everything and we look forward to seeing how well they did in the reports which are
being written at this very moment.

2013 Entry - could I please ask that if you are looking at a School other than Felsted for transfer in 2013 then please check with the individual schools for their deadline entry dates.  A meeting at the beginning of next term will be arranged to discuss transfer arrangements at 13+.

Have a lovely weekend.

News from the Cub Pack

Following on from last week's fire-lighting the Cubs took it one step further this week and lit a fire large enough to toast their marshmallows - yummy!

Leaders Required!

It is with regret that I am standing down as Cub Leader after 17 years.  Personal circumstances are changing and I no longer can be committed each week to running Cubs although I will still be involved as Group Scout Leader and available to help out on occasions.

Mrs Lesley Lee who has been an Assistant Leader is also hanging up her woggle.  I have asked the District Commissioner to start looking for our replacements.

If you know of anyone who might be interested in taking on the role of a Leader then please contact either me (kal@felstedprep.org) or Dave Cohen, District Commissioner (david@dcohen@fslife.co.uk).
